As a graduate student, who recently took both the English Maturita and IELTS exam, I feel like the person obligated to finally make the comparison we have all been waiting to see. Two exams, the same target audience, different approaches. One widely popular among people applying for universities and jobs, one forever advocated for by public schools. There are many aspects of these exams that could be compared. Number of grammar mistakes reported by students and teachers each year, clarity of essay questions, or the number of professionals involved in creating the test itself. But when we are, as students, sitting in the exam room, sweating, rethinking our future, these are not really the thing we care about most. What we care about are the next couple of hours and how we spend them. What we read in them. ~ Positive emotions are harder to evoke for the reason that they are created in a more advanced part of our brain, that was developed later in evolution. On the other hand, negative emotions, such as anger, are created in a more primitive section of the brain, which makes them easier to rise.~ (note from the author: this is a paraphrase used to prove the point, might not be 100% accurate) One of the topics in the December 2023 IELTS exam I took was the difference between creation of positive and negative emotions. The author intriguingly described the process of evolution of our brain and how it affected our ability to create emotions. When I took the exam few years earlier, there was a reportage about Russian clinic for domesticating polar foxes. How they were training them to be pets, to imitate dogs even. One they managed to train was named Pushinka, who learnt how to bark and wag her tail. To this day it is a favourite Friday evening conversation topic among my friends. When I opened the Maturita exam paper two weeks ago, I was also astonished, immediately knowing I was looking at something, that would be later talked about. The heading, in big bold letters, wrote: Economy of Moldova (6 points). Needless to say, those were well deserved 6 points. The article was 428 words, covering the topics of cultivability of Moldova’s land, the extent of the land suitable for sunflower seeds production, import of wood from Russia and so much more. Though I consider myself an experienced reader, I had to go through this one a few times. Other topics worth mentioning were Blue Corn, production of Piki bread from this corn in south America, or the sights and spas of Poland. However,we all appreciated the Cillian Murphy biography. What is the point of me telling you all of this? When students learn, they want to learn. Not about the percentage of wood imported from Russia. Grammar or vocabulary, those can both be tested on something interesting, something they are eager to read. They want to learn through something that excites them, something they will remember. Longer than a week. Something that makes it easier and clearer for them. And IELTS simply does a better job at this. Hospodárstvo Moldavska - Príbeh o tom, ako nás NÚCEM (opäť) sklamal Ako maturant, ktorý nedávno absolvoval maturitu z angličtiny aj skúšku IELTS, cítim povinnosť konečne urobiť porovnanie, na ktoré sme všetci čakali. Dve skúšky, rovnaká cieľová skupina, rôzne prístupy. Jedna obľúbená medzi ľuďmi uchádzajúcimi sa o vysoké školy a zamestnanie, druhá obhajovaná štátnymi školami. Existuje mnoho aspektov týchto skúšok, ktoré by sa dali porovnať. Počet gramatických chýb, ktoré každoročne nahlasujú študenti a učitelia, zrozumiteľnosť tém esejí alebo počet odborníkov, ktorí sa podieľali na tvorbe samotného testu. Ale keď ako študenti sedíme v skúšobnej miestnosti, potíme sa a premýšľame nad svojou budúcnosťou, nie sú to veci, ktoré nás v tej chvíli najviac zaujímajú. To, čo nás zaujíma, je ako nasledujúcich pár hodín strávime. Čo sa dočítame. ~ Pozitívne emócie sa ťažšie vyvolávajú z toho dôvodu, že sa vytvárajú v pokročilejšej časti nášho mozgu, ktorá sa vyvinula neskôr v evolúcii. Na druhej strane, negatívne emócie, ako napríklad hnev, sa vytvárajú v primitívnejšej časti mozgu, vďaka čomu sa ľahšie vyvolávajú ~ (poznámka autorky: ide o parafrázu použitú na dôkaz, nemusí byť stopercentne presná) Jednou z tém skúšky IELTS z decembra 2023, ktorú som absolvovala, bol rozdiel medzi vytváraním pozitívnych a negatívnych emócií. Autor pútavo opísal proces evolúcie nášho mozgu a to, ako ovplyvnil našu schopnosť vytvárať emócie. Keď som robila skúšku o niekoľko rokov skôr, bola tam reportáž o ruskej klinike na domestikáciu polárnych líšok. Ako ich cvičili na domáce zvieratá, dokonca na napodobňovanie psov. Jedna z nich, ktorú sa im podarilo vycvičiť, sa volala Pušinka a naučila sa štekať a vrtieť chvostom. Dodnes je to obľúbená téma piatkových rozhovorov s kamarátmi. Keď som pred dvoma týždňami otvorila maturitný test, vedela som, že sa pozerám na niečo, o čom sa bude neskôr rozprávať. V nadpise bolo veľkými tučnými písmenami napísané: Hospodárstvo Moldavska (6 bodov). Bolo to zaslúžených 6 bodov. Článok mal 428 slov a venoval sa témam obrábateľnosti moldavskej pôdy, rozsahu pôdy vhodnej na produkciu slnečnicových semien, dovozu dreva z Ruska a mnohým ďaľším. Hoci sa považujem za skúsenú čitateľku, tento článok som si musela prečítať niekoľkokrát. Ďaľšie témy, ktoré stoja za zmienku boli Modrá kukurica, výroba chleba Piki z tejto kukurice v Južnej Amerike alebo pamiatky a kúpele v Poľsku. Všetci sme však ocenili životopis Cilliana Murphyho. Aký zmysel má, že vám to všetko rozprávam? Keď sa žiaci učia, chcú sa učiť. Nie o percente dreva dovezeného z Ruska. Gramatika alebo slovná zásoba, tie sa dajú skúšať aj na niečom zaujímavom, na niečom, čo si s študenti prečítať chcú. Chcú sa učiť prostredníctvom niečoho, čo ich nadchne, čo si zapamätajú. Dlhšie ako týždeň. Niečo, čo im to uľahčí a sprehľadní. A IELTS toto jednoducho dokáže lepšie.
