Devin Castle is also connected with St. Cyril & Method, the patrons of Slovakia, who according to the legends should lived and worked here. In 13th century after the Tartar Mongol wars, the King Belo IV decided to built a castle here. In 1809 the castle was destroyed by Napoleon army. Now the castle are just the very well preserved ruins. Devin Castle is in Slovakia also well known thanks to a trip of a band of Slovakian group of Ludovit Stur, who fought for autonomy of Slovakia within Austro Hungarian Empire. Devin Castle as a Part of Iron Curtain During time of communism 1949 1989, Devin area and the confluence of river Danube and river Moravia was a frontier of iron curtain, where unfortunately died a so many refugees who wanted escape from socialist/ communist paradise to west. The remark of the casualties is a Gate of Freedom located under the castle.
